Direct Debit Payments
Direct Debit's popularity is increasing worldwide - and in some countries, it is the most popular payment method behind cards!
Direct Debit was originally used to debit customers' bank accounts on a regular basis (e.g., weekly, monthly) for collecting subscription payments or recurring billings. Today, this payment method is becoming popular for one-off online payments.
Payment Process

Mandate / Bank Authorization
In several European countries, customers can give a one-time approval to the merchant so we can debit the customer's bank account for a certain amount. Because it must contain a signature, the approval is usually sent to GlobalCollect by fax or regular postal mail.
The process of a mandate / bank authorization payment can take up to seven working days. This is because the system is comparable to the United States check. The customer sends a form to GlobalCollect, who takes the form to the bank. This bank then contacts the customer's bank and asks for approval of the transfer. After the transfer is made, the merchant is notified by GlobalCollect.
Whether or not the mandate is unconditional depends on the country where the bank authorization is issued. For example, in The Netherlands, bank authorizations ('eenmalige machtigingen') are unconditional. But in Germany, there is a 'charge back' period of six weeks.
Availability
GlobalCollect supports direct debits in the countries where this payment method is popular including: Canada, United States, Australia, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and United Kingdom.
Benefits
Because there is much less risk than with credit card payments, direct debit is also less expensive to process. Usually, there is a fixed cost involved instead of a percentage of the total amount as a commission fee. The cost is typically small, i.e. less than 0.25 euros. Last but not lease, with Direct Debit you stay in full control of the payments.
